European Interns and Volunteers enchanted by the Mother City

GoGap places 100’s of European students each year in internship and volunteer positions in South Africa. We do our utmost to place each student or intern in an environment that will best suit his or her skill-set, thereby also providing the most benefit to the community or project in which they are placed. A large proportion of the European applicants request placement in projects close to Cape Town. This is not difficult to understand given the beauty of the city and it’s popularity with backpackers, travellers and holiday makers from around the world.Green Point is located between Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean and is within walking distance from the City Centre. It is also very close to the very well-known beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay. This suburb is regarded as one of the most fashionable, lively and stunning suburbs in the City of Cape Town.

Green Point Urban Park

On more than one occasion we have placed interns at the popular Cape Town backpackers, Ashanti Lodge. Ashanti is situated perfectly in Cape Town – not to close to the hum and drum of the city, yet still a five minute walk from the centre of everything. Green Point Park has numerous facilities that are available to the public and is a major attraction for residents and visitor alike. Entrance to the Park is free, and those of you that love walking here can enjoy a leisurely relaxing walk. The walkways of the Park are engineered that when you exit any of the two main gates, you will be able to link with many major heritage sites. The Eastern Gate will provide you access to the Green Point Lighthouse and lead you on to the boulevard pedestrian walkway. The Western Gate will link you to Beach Road and the Mouille Point Promenade.

If you are into cycling then the Park is for you as there are designated cycling paths as well as a cycling fitness park. The kids are by no means left out as they can enjoy the children’s playground. They have a special Tot-Lot play park for children from ages 1 to 6, there is also an adventure play park for children ages 7 to 16. If you are interested in keeping fit then they have an outdoor gym. Here you can use all the equipment free of charge and at the same time enjoy the outdoor fresh air. This activity will save you a lot of gym fee money. There are also large areas of lawn where you and your family can relax and enjoy your picnic lunch. These same areas are often used for concerts and other outdoor events.

Cape Town Stadium

This is an amazing structure and it is right in Cape Town’s own backyard. If you are planning to visit this stadium for any upcoming event then rest assured your access has been made very easy. You can travel by car and park in the available parking area or you can travel to Cape Town Station from your home and enjoy a short walk to the stadium and save yourself the hassle of traffic jams after the event. Let us not make the mistake of regarding this stadium as a venue only for sporting events. There are exciting venues and facilities available for private or business occasions that will make the event not only spectacular but also unforgettable.

Green Point Lighthouse

The Green Point Lighthouse is easily noticed by its red and white stripes painted on the outside. This colour scheme was used in order to differentiate it from the cottages that surrounded it.  It was first put into service and lit up in 1824. Despite its age the lighthouse tower still retains its original form but the lights have been replaced by a revolving beam. Today it houses the Head Office of the Lighthouse Services whose function is to maintain all the 45 lighthouses along the South African Coastline.

The Ashanti Backpackers Lodge in Green Point gives all its visitors a quiet and secluded stay, and breakfast is included in the tariff. Ashanti has an extremely efficient Travel centre that will manage all your sight seeing requirements from an overland tour to shark-cage diving. The Lodge is in a perfect position, as it is a walk away from the V & A Waterfront, the Cape Town Stadium and the City Centre. They also offer their visitors the luxury of a swimming pool, relaxing lounges and TV room. The accommodation is also geared to suit all your living requirements in order to make your stay the best you have ever had.
